Glossary of Terms
Algorithm
Formulas that search engines use to determine a websites rank.

Blog
A journal style website that displays the most recent entries first and enables readers to post their own comments.

Blogger
Person who blogs

Broad Match
A PPC Search Engine option in which an ad will appear for a keyword phrase, written in any order, often with additional words, and plural forms.

Click through
The process of clicking on a link in a search engine to visit an indexed site.

Heading
Many search engines give extra weight and importance to the text found inside HTML heading sections.

Hit
A hit (or site hit) is a single access request made to the server for either a text file or a graphic.

Keyword
A word that forms part of a search engine query.

Keyword Phrase
A phrase that forms part of a search engine query.

Keyword search
A search for documents and sites containing words or phrases that are specified by a user.

Meta tag
A construct placed in the HTML header of a web page, providing information that is not visible to browsers.

Optimization
Changes made to a web page to improve the positioning of that page with one or more search engines.

Pay per click (PPC, payperclick, pay-per-click)
Pay per click is an advertising technique used on websites, advertising networks, and search engines. With search engines, pay per click advertisements are ads placed near search results; when a site visitor clicks on the advertisement, the advertiser is charged a small amount.

Positioning
The process of ordering web sites or web pages by a search engine or a directory so that the most relevant sites appear first in the search results for a particular query.

Query
A word, a phrase or a group of words used to pass instructions to a search engine or a directory in order to locate web pages.

ROI
Return On Investment

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
A variety of tasks intended to increase rank in search engines, with the goal being to increase traffic to a site.

Search Engine
A server dedicated to indexing Internet web pages, storing the results and returning lists of pages that match particular queries.

Spider, Spyder
That part of a search engine that surfs the web, storing the URLs and indexing the keywords and text of each page it finds.

Traffic
The visitors to a web page or web site.

Web Copywriting
The writing of text especially for a web page. Good web copywriting can have a great effect on search engine positioning, therefore it forms a major part of optimization.
